Saving lives is our priority
Most people are aware of the dangers of driver fatigue but our ability to recognise the signs diminishes as we become more fatigued. The team at SmartCap is committed to safety and ensuring that everyone gets home safely each and every day. We believe that ultimately each and every person is responsible for managing their own fatigue so our technology is designed to ensure that individuals are empowered to make this possible. Through alerts, reports, and profiles each user will know when they are at risk and the times of the day that their risk is greatest. SmartCap helps to develop techniques to effectively manage fatigue and alarms to ensure your workforce is safe.
History
We developed SmartCap to overcome the limitations of fatigue monitoring technologies. Available technologies were not predictive and reliant on lag indicators to generate alarms once a person had fallen asleep. There were also problems with the size of the machine, versatility, and the number of false alarms.
Our wearable technology was developed using EEG (electroencephalography), the gold standard in sleep science. EEG has been used for more than 70 years and is unaffected by glare, humidity, head turns, eye disease, or behaviour. Unlike many technologies, our products are predictive and they do not require post processing or live monitoring of data to provide real-time operator alerts.
In 2021, SmartCap was acquired by Wenco International Mining Systems, a subsidiary of Hitachi Construction Machinery.
Our Technology
Our technology was developed within Mining3, a Cooperative Research Centre established by the Australian government, supported by four universities and 13 industry partners including equipment manufacturers and mining companies. Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (previously Anglo Coal Australia) and the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) supported this work for a number of years, which led to successful field trials in surface mining operations to monitor operators of haul trucks, excavators, dozers, graders, and water trucks. Today, SmartCap is used by some of the world’s biggest companies and has expanded far beyond mining.
Validation
SmartCap’s technology has been independently validated by the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) and Austin Health Institute of Breathing and Sleep (IBAS). Field validation has been completed by participating SmartCap customers, and analysed by experts from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Chile.
What does this mean?
Our brainwave technology has been independently lab-validated and field-validated by experts, and proven to effectively and accurately measure an individual’s ability to resist sleep.
